DID YOU KNOW....

Did you know that in 1942 no team from the Moyle Rovers was affiliated. In 1943 a junior football team was affiliated.  No team was affiliated in 1944 or 1945. In 1946 a junior football team was affiliated.  From 1947 to 1955 no teams from the Moyle Rovers were affiliated.  Around this time 1945/1955 a group of young men from the parish used to meet regularly and play football in Lonergans field behind the hall in Lisronagh. They had one set of goal posts which happened to be soccer goal post and two coats laid on the ground at the opposite end formed the other goal and the perimeters of the field.  Amongst these young men were Joe K  R.I.P, James O Meara, John Hunt, Dick Smyth, Tom Purcell, John Kenny, Tom Hannigan. the Late Michael(Mickey) Ryan, John Ryan, Michael(Ik) McGrath R.I.P. Jack McGrath, Mick Morrissey, Mick Burke, Paddy McCarthy.   Enter the late/great Mick McCarthy R.I.P.  Fr Tobin R.I.P. Mick ODonnell R.I.P. Dick Lonergans R.I.P. Billy O Brien R.I.P. Gerry Phelan R.I.P. Dick Smyth R.I.P.  These amongst others decided to reform the Moyle Rovers and a minor and junior football teams were affiliated in 1956.   The names of the young men mentioned above formed the back bone of the minor team and many of these names went on to give years of loyal services to our club.

Ladies Football.
Monroe was the place to be last Thursday evening as Moyle Rovers Under 16 girls took on Cahir in the County semi final. What a game of football we were treated to. Going into the game as underdogs our girls took the game to Cahir from the off. They played with tremendous courage ,skill, passion and determination and were extremely unlucky to be beaten by a Cahir goal in injury time.We were worth our two point lead at half time, and unlucky not to be ahead by more, as we kicked some tremendous points in the first half and led 1-8 to 1-6 at half time.Facing into the wind for the second half Moyle Rovers absorbed a lot of pressure from Cahir before scoring two great goals to bring the game level on full time. A fortuitous goal for Cahir in jury time sealed victory for them on a scoreline of 3-9 to 2-15.The girls left the field with their heads held high having done themselves and the Moyle Rovers Club very proud on the night. It was a pulsating game of football and great credit to all the panel and Team management of Frances Ryan,Paudie Everard and Eamonn Power.
